Where is Varna and what kind of destination is it?

Varna sits on the northern half of Bulgaria's Black Sea coast, and it separates itself from every other destination on this site in one way. Varna is a real city. People live and work here all year, and the beach starts at the bottom of it.

Varna's year-round population matters more than it sounds. A purpose-built resort exists only for visitors, so its prices, opening hours, and atmosphere follow the season. A working city has residents to serve, which is why local prices answer to residents, not to the season, and why September still feels open.

How does Varna fit the rest of the coast?

What is Varna beach like?

Varna's central beach runs below the Sea Garden, the large seafront park that separates the city from the sand. You walk down through the park to reach it, which is why the beach feels attached to the city rather than fenced off from it.

Varna Central Beach is the busiest. If you want space, the two names worth knowing are Kabakum Beach and Asparuhovo.

Kabakum Beach sits about 10 km north of the centre, on the way towards the resort strip. It is a local favourite, quieter than the central sand, and easy to reach on the same bus corridor that serves the hotels.

Asparuhovo

Asparuhovo lies across the bay, about 6 km from the centre, in Varna's southern suburb. It is one of the widest beaches in the city, reaching over 100 m in places, and it stays less crowded because reaching it means crossing the bridge.

Is Varna better than Golden Sands?

Neither is better. They are different products, and the honest answer depends on what your week is actually for. Golden Sands sits about 17 km north of the city, so you can stay in one and visit the other on any day you like.

Varna or Burgas?

Choosing between Varna and Burgas is a question about which half of the coast you want. Varna serves the northern resorts. Burgas, about 132 km south, serves Sunny Beach, Nessebar, Pomorie, Sozopol, Aheloy, and Obzor, which is where most of our other guides sit. Varna splits into four stay zones, running from the city centre northwards up the coast. They are different holidays, not just different postcodes, and each one changes what a self-catering apartment costs and what you can walk to.

How do you get to Varna from Varna Airport?

Check the airport before you book. Varna is served by Varna Airport (VAR), which is only about 10 km from the city. Our other destination guides, including Sunny Beach, Nessebar, Pomorie, Sozopol, Aheloy, and Obzor, are on the southern coast and are served by Burgas Airport (BOJ). The transfer itself is short. The airport sits about 10 km from the centre, roughly 15 to 20 minutes by road, and Albena at the far end of the northern strip is about 40 km.

When is the best time to visit Varna?

Peak season is July and August, when the beaches are fullest and prices are highest. The shoulder season, May, June and September, is the better value. This is where a city beats a resort. Restaurants and museums stay open because residents still need them, so a September trip finds the city running normally.

What is there to do in Varna?

The Sea Garden and the Varna Archaeological Museum are the two fixtures a resort strip cannot match. The Sea Garden alone absorbs an afternoon, and the museum gives you a genuine rainy-day answer. The city centre also holds the Roman Thermae, the bath ruins left from Odessos, the Greek settlement Varna grew out of, and they sit close enough to walk to from the pedestrianised core.

The Archaeological Museum holds prehistoric gold excavated from the Varna Necropolis. It is the city's most distinctive cultural claim and the single thing here you cannot see anywhere else on the coast.

Day trips from Varna

Staying in Varna puts these four excursions within an hour's drive.

• Aladzha Monastery, about 15 km. A rock-cut medieval monastery inside the Golden Sands Nature Park.
• The Stone Forest, about 18 km. Natural rock columns inland from the coast, an easy half day.
• Balchik, about 38 km. A coastal town with a palace and botanical garden at the northern end of the day-trip range.
• Albena, about 30 km. The quietest of the northern resorts, family-focused.

Evenings in Varna

Varna's evenings are spread across a city rather than concentrated on one strip, so you choose the volume rather than having it chosen for you. That is the practical difference between staying here and staying at Golden Sands.

Is Varna safe for UK families?

Varna is a normal European city, and it behaves like one. Take the usual care with bags in busy places, ordinary road sense when crossing, and choose a beach that matches your children's swimming.

Varna's streets are shared, not managed. On a resort strip your surroundings are arranged end to end. In a city you walk the same pavements as people going to work, which is a different kind of holiday and worth knowing before you arrive.

For beach conditions specifically, the central beach is the busiest and Asparuhovo is the widest. Check the flag and lifeguard arrangements on the day, as these vary by beach and by month.

Is Varna worth visiting?

Yes, if you want more than a beach. You get a working city with a beach attached, food priced for the people who live there, a museum holding gold no other coast town has, and four excursions inside an hour. Say no if a single all-inclusive resort is what you are actually after, because Varna will feel like too much work for that.

Varna suits you if you want a beach holiday that keeps going after the beach. You get a city to walk, food priced for residents, museums for the day the weather turns, and a base you can travel out from. Varna suits a shoulder season trip better than most of this coast, because the city stays open. Two or three days covers the city itself. A week only makes sense if you are using Varna as a base and taking the day trips.

Skip Varna if what you want is a single all-inclusive resort where everything is on site and you never need to plan a day. That is a real and reasonable holiday, and Golden Sands or Albena do it better.
