Aheloy FAQ · Beach

Is Aheloy beach safe for swimming?

Aheloy beach is safe for general swimming. The Black Sea in the Gulf of Burgas has a negligible tidal range, which means wave action stays predictable and calm compared to Atlantic or Mediterranean coasts. The seabed shelves gently from the shoreline, giving children and non-confident swimmers a long, shallow paddling zone before the water deepens. The beach is not lifeguarded as of the 2025 season, so you should supervise children at the water's edge at all times and avoid swimming alone at dusk. Bulgarian Black Sea beaches operate under the EU Bathing Water Directive, and routine water quality monitoring applies to the coastline. The low salinity of around 18 parts per thousand, roughly half the Atlantic average, is gentle on skin and eyes. In July and August occasional moon jellyfish appear, but they are not dangerous and typically disperse within a day or two. Overall, for families with young children, Aheloy is one of the safest natural swimming environments on the Bulgarian coast.
