What to be careful of in Bulgaria?

Be careful of three things in Bulgaria as a UK visitor. First, price confusion: Bulgaria uses EUR, so confirm the final euro amount and refuse any informal "tourist rate" a tout offers. Second, unlicensed taxis outside Burgas Airport and the Sunny Beach strip; use licensed taxis with a visible company sticker, insist on the meter where appropriate, and agree a price in advance for airport runs. Third, drink promotions on the Flower Street strip often pour weaker spirits or over charge at 3am; stick to bottled beer or pay per drink. Petty theft, spiked bills on unlisted menus, and unmarked sunbed fees are the other common complaints. Keep cards, passports, and phones in a hotel safe.
