Aheloy FAQ · Beach

Does Aheloy beach have a Blue Flag?

Aheloy beach does not currently hold Blue Flag certification. The beach was not listed in the 2025 Bulgarian Blue Flag awards. This does not indicate poor water quality. Bulgarian Black Sea beaches operate under the EU Bathing Water Directive, and routine monitoring covers the Aheloy coastline as part of the broader Pomorie Municipality coastal zone. The absence of Blue Flag status most commonly reflects missing facilities such as disabled access infrastructure, a certain number of rubbish bins per metre of beach, or formal lifeguard coverage, rather than a water quality failure. For comparison, nearby Sveti Vlas New Beach, 12 kilometres north, holds Blue Flag status and has done so for 17 consecutive years. Sunny Beach itself holds Bulgaria's first Blue Flag, first awarded in 1995. Families who treat Blue Flag as a key decision factor may prefer a day trip to those certified beaches while staying in Aheloy, which offers quieter and cheaper accommodation just 6 kilometres from Sunny Beach's certified shoreline. Aheloy's sandy, calm, gently shelving beach remains a safe and pleasant swimming environment regardless of certification.
